This solution is only applicable if you are facing the issue while having only one version of QB installed on your system. However, you will need the QuickBooks Desktop installation CD before you perform the repair process. So keep it handy before moving ahead.

  1. First, restart your computer and close any other application interacting with QuickBooks.
  2. Now, tap on the Start menu and then click on the Control panel.
  3. Open the Control panel and select the Programs and Features tab here.
  4. Now, choose the Uninstall or Change the Program option to remove or make changes with QuickBooks.
  5. Choose the option and then click on Continue and then Next.
  6. Now, tap on the Repair option and tap Next. You will have to wait till the repair process gets completed.

  1. Go to the Employees menu at the top.
  2. Select the Get Payroll Updates option.

  4. Now, mark the Download Entire Update checkbox to continue.
  5. Next, tap on Download latest Update.
  6. It will pop up a new window once the download gets completed.

Method 2: Install the Latest QB Updates and Re-Register it

This solution is only applicable if you are facing the issue while having only one version of QB installed on your system. You would need to reset the already existing QB updates.

  1. Run the QuickBooks Desktop application and press the F2 key to open the Product Information window.
  2. Look for the section where the QB License Number is mentioned and make sure it is Activated.
  3. In case the product is not activated, you need to register it using the license key.
  4. Now, scroll to the Help tab and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. Click the Update Now option and hit the Get Updates button.
  6. Let it download the latest updates.

  4. Now, Create your QuickBooks data.
  5. If you are using the Windows 7 and 8 on your system, you would need to disable the UAC. (Steps are given below in method 4)
  6. Now, try to download the QB Payroll updates and check if the error persists.

Two conditions will arrive here:

Condition 2: If there is only one version of QB Desktop installed on your system.
  • Back up all your QB company files.
  • Shut down any application running in the background.
  • Next, click on the Run Window.
For Windows Vista, follow the given steps:
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Type Run in the command prompt.
  • Then press Enter.
For Windows 7 and XP, follow the given steps:
  • If you are not logged in as Admin, click on the Start button.
  • Now, tap on All Programs.
  • Click on the Accessories option and then hit Run.
For Windows 8, follow the given steps:
  • Browser to the Windows System Section.
  • Then click Start and right-click on the Background to All apps option.
  • Next, hit the Run button.
Condition 2: If multiple versions of QB DEsktop are installed on your system.
  • Firstly, remove all the additional installation from your device.
  • Now, reset all the QB updates.
  • Next, download the latest Payroll Tax Table.
  • Then Sort the list.
  • Now, click on the Verify Data/ Rebuild Data option if it seems necessary to rebuild the data.
  • At last, go to the Selective Startup option and do a Clean Uninstall/ Reinstall of the application.

Method 4:  Running the QuickBooks File Doctor to fix the Corrupted Company File causing QuickBooks Error PS077.

If you find that your company file is causing you the error, then you can repair its damage by running the QuickBooks file doctor.

  1. Go to the QB Tool Hub and click on the Company File Issues.
  2. Now, click on the Run QuickBooks File Doctor from the drop-down menu. It can take about a minute to open.
  3. In case you are not able to open QuickBooks File Doctor, search for QuickBooks Desktop File Doc and open it manually.
  4. Now, choose the company file from the drop-down menu in QuickBooks File Doctor. If you do not see your file, then browse and locate it.
  5. Once you find it, choose the Check your file option and press Continue.
  6. Now, you need to enter the QuickBooks admin password and select the Next option.

The time it takes to scan your file depends upon the size of your company file. It may take up to a maximum of 5 minutes to complete the scan. Once the scan gets completed, open QB and the company file to see if the problem got resolved.

Method 5: Turn off the User Account Control UAC on Windows to resolve QuickBooks Error PS077

  1. Press Windows + Letter R together on your keyboard to open the Run window.
  2. In the search bar of the Run window, type Control Panel and click OK.
  3. Now in the search bar of the Control Panel, search for User Accounts.
  4. Click on the Change User Account Control Settings option.
  5. Hit Yes and move the slider down to Never Notify to turn off UAC.
  6. Enter your admin user details if asked.
  7. Restart your system first and try updating QuickBooks Payroll.
